Many famous people have spent time in Odessa. Some of these people’s memory has been immortalized in the city’s landscape with street names, statues and buildings named in their honour.
Louis Alexandre Andrault de Langeron (1763-1831), a French royalist who became Governor of Odessa (1816-1820) has a street named after him and is buried in Odessa.
Armand-Emmanuel-Sophie-Septimanie de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu (1766-1822), a French royalist who become Governor of Odessa (1803-1814) has a street, a school and a monument named after him.
José Pascual Domingo de Ribas y Boyons (1747-1800), a son of a Spanish diplomat who became a Governor of Odessa (1794-1797) has a famous pedestrian walkway and a monument named after him.

Maria Guleghina – a dramatic soprano, who considers herself of Ukrainian, Armenian, Jewish and Polish heritage was born in Odessa on August 9, 1959 and began her operatic career in Odessa.
